HQ-25 NARROW BANNER.png

The 25-Item Hikikomori Questionnaire (HQ-25) is a self‐administered questionnaire used to assess hikikomori, a form of severe social withdrawal and an emerging mental health issue.

The HQ-25 was originally developed in English and Japanese. It is scored between 0-100, with higher scores representing more severe symptoms of hikikomori. In the original study of the HQ-25, we proposed a score of 42 on the HQ-25 as a cutoff indicating risk for hikikomori, and we identified three factors in the scale: lack of sociality, isolation, and lack of emotional support. Additional information is available in open-access medical journal articles located here and here.

I have attempted to provide as much information as possible on the adaptation and testing of the HQ-25 in other languages. While I cannot verify all the information, I hope it is helpful.

If you are interested in using the HQ-25, including for research or clinical purposes, please click on the download link for the appropriate language below.
